Learn how to create a very simple grunge effect
without brushes!
Step 1: Create a new document 400x300px, and fill the background
black, go up to Filter->Render->Lens Flare (105mm Prime). So you should
have something like below.
Step 2: Go up to Filter->Liquify, and make it look some what like
below.
Step 3: Now duplicate the layer, and with the new layer on top selected,
go up to Filter->Distort->Polar Coordinates (Rectangular to Polar). Now
go up to Filter->Stylize->Wind (Wind, From the Left). You should have something
like below.
Step 4: Now rotate the image by going to Edit->Transform->Rotate
90 CW, do that repeat the Wind Filter by going through the menu again or
hitting Ctrl + F. Now Rotate 90 CW again and repeat the Wind Filter again,
and one more time, and one more time, so you have done this a total of 4 times
and you should now have something like below.
Step 5: Now change the blending mode of the current layer to "Linear
Light." And I like to change the Hue/Saturation of the top layer to give
it a little more effect, go up to Image -> Adjustments -> Hue/Saturation.
Play with the settings, I put (Hue: 225, Saturation: 25, Lightness: -5). And
of course merge the layers down by going up to Layers -> Merge Down.
Step 6: Add anything else you want, and call it good.
